What happened:
The Maroons edged Tavua by a close 8-7 win in the battle of the bottom teams of the Skipper Cup competitions at Churchill Park, Lautoka yesterday.
The round eight clash was a physical affair as both teams battle to climb out of the drop zone as the bottom placed team faces promotion/relegation later this year.
The Maroons started with a bang and drew first blood in the 13th minute with a try from right wing Mosese Tuisarere to put the sugar city ahead 5-0 as scrumhalf Sireli Satala failed with the conversion.
Halftime: Lautoka 5-0 Tavua
In the second spell, the momentum shift as Tavua took charge leaving the Maroons to defend their tryline.
Tavua’s persistent effort finally paid off in the 52nd minute when winger Waisake Gaugau charged his way down past the Lautoka defecse to score Tavua’s first try which was converted by flyhalf Tevita Naroyasi for the visitors to lead 7-5.
The pressure was on for Lautoka as they tried to break the Tavua defencetime, their luck finally turned when a penality. It paid off in the end after being given a penalty which was kicked by Vucago Bainitabua to seal win 8-7.

Star Turn:
Lautoka’s wing Mosese Tuisarere was special as it broke the deadlock and helped in the win.

Big Play:
Tavua played well in the second half but fell short in the end.

Comments:
Tavua coach Akariva Tabutaci said, “The main problem we faced was decision making on the field. We had the game but bad decisions cost us the game.
When the players are supposed to kick the ball they played it, so they didnt stick to the game plan.”
Lautoka coach Viliame Satala said, “The boys played better in the second half but they were disorganised in the first half. I’m happy with the win. We have three more games coming up which will be important for us and we need to improve on our mistakes and focus more.”
