Radisson Blu Resort Fiji held a cocktail last Friday in celebration of winning the 2014 “Responsible Business Hotel of the Year” for the Asia- Pacific region of the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group.
The resort’s general manager, Gerald Knight, said that was a way to thank the responsible business committee and the resort’s partners.
“Part of the win was a cash prize which was to thank them,” said Mr Knight.
“It is important for the committee to use their prizemoney in thanking all of the people who have assisted them in achieving such great results for the Adopt a School Programme,” he said.
“The Adopt a School Programme is mainly about raising funds from our guest. We raise fund by having a small levy on every guest account. It is a voluntary levy but hardly anybody takes it off; they all pay it.”
“We visit schools and after the visit, we have a donation box out and people are welcome to put money in that box and many do.”
Fourteen schools are currently in the programme with plans to have seven more schools joining.
“We don’t hand over the cash to any school, we actually manage the projects. We actually analyse projects in school so every step of the way from the beginning to the end of the projects, we maintain that and then we do a review on a regular basis,” said Mr Knight.
“On a weekly basis we are actually handing over stationery, supplies that the schools have asked for and this is possible through donations from guests,” he said.
Library volunteers include Kristina Halford, Alison Browne, Sarah Lobb, Alex Bee, Helen Trueman, Jane Capp, and Judy Darby.
The resort’s partners, includes: Ratu Navula College, Nadi District, Nadi Primary, Mulomulo Primary, Mulomulo Secondary, Nawaka District, Vuniyasi District School, Togo Primary, Nawai Primary, Vaturu District School, Nawai Secondary.
Supporting partners includes Rise beyond the Reef, William and Goslings, Noda Transport, Unicom Computers, Lautoka Blood drive, Susana Nakalevu – divisional medical officer – Western and Lorima Voravora – divisional education officer – Western.
