It was a day to forget for all Brazilians
They lost composure under weight of expectation. The world watched in disbelief yesterday as World Cup soccer favourite Brazil were thumped in spectacular style by a clinical German side 7-1.
The Brazillians could not use the unavailability of their star player Neymar as an excuse. They must have collapsed mentally because of the sheer weight of expectation of their millions of fans. Let’s not take anything away from the Germans. They were a class side and they showed it in their demolition job.
The Brazillian media have led the scathing attacks against their disgraced stars.
Lance! described the loss as the “biggest shame of history”.
The paper said the humiliation would eclipse the World Cup final loss the team suffered in 1950 at the hands of Uruguay. Sixty-four years ago Brazil cried over the “great drama” of the 2-1 loss, but yesterday’s capitulation would have the country gushing tears of humiliation, it said.
Correio Braziliense said it was “the biggest embarrassment in the history of Brazilian football”. It was the worst loss in 100 years.
Estado de Minas said it was a “massacre”, while Estadao was similarly punishing and said it was a “historical humiliation”.
Media commentators used an array of expletives to describe the unprecedented huge loss by a top ranking team.
When the dust begins to settle and the post mortem continues, one thing is clear – Brazil was stung by their own lack of mental preparation and Germany pounced on it.
