Fiji Airways and Film Fiji have announced that two stars from New Zealand’s long-running TV series Shortland Street, Ben Mitchell and Frankie Adams, will attend the final two nights of the 2014 Film Fiji Kula Awards, on Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26.
Shortland Street stars Ben Mitchell (who plays TK Samuels) and Frankie Adams (who plays Ula Levi) will join dozens of high school students at the annual awards.
The Film Fiji Kula Awards, now in its ninth year, is an annual competition for high school students to produce movies or videos. The awards are judged for best script, best movie, best acting and best director.
Film Fiji chairperson Shaenaz Voss said: “We’re really excited to have Ben and Frankie in Suva as star attractions for the Kula Awards, along with all our participating students from around Fiji.
“We are grateful to South Pacific Pictures, producers of Shortland Street, for their help in sending Ben and Frankie across to the Kula Awards. It will mean a lot to budding film-makers and Fijian students to have their on-screen stars with them during the awards.”
The actors are flying in to Fiji courtesy of Fiji Airways.
Stefan Pichler, managing director and chief executive officer of Fiji Airways said: “We’re part of the 2014 Film Fiji Kula Awards with the inaugural Fiji Airways Art Competition that aims to promote creative expression amongst students and we’re thrilled to bring the stars of Shortland Street to Fiji’s capital to be part of the festivities as well.
“We take great pride in our country and our children, so we’re happy to lend our support. New Zealand is a key market for us, and for Fijian tourism, so we’re delighted to have two household names for both countries on board.”
Playing the role of the much-loved doctor, TK Samuels, Ben has been a core-cast member of Shortland Street for over eight years and has also starred in several movies.
Frankie Adams has played teen character Ula Levi for four years and recently gained accolades from New Zealand’s Woman’s Day Magazine as one of the most prominent female actors on New Zealand television screens.
Shortland Street is one of New Zealand’s most popular TV shows with an average weeknight viewing audience of over 500,000 people.
It is a top-rated show in Fiji, airing weeknights on Fiji TV’s Fiji One channel.
“We are really excited to be coming over to Suva to see what the students have come up with,” says Ben Mitchell. “We are so pleased that Fiji Airways was able to create this opportunity so that we can witness first-hand the talent of students in Fiji.”
