He worked tirelessly to bring Arya Samaj into Fiji to serve its social and educational engagements.

The former national president of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Surendra Prasad “Arya Ratna’, has died in Sydney, Australia on July 6 this year.
The former Fiji lawyer and magistrate was a prominent member of the Arya Samaj Movement in Fiji and was the national president from 1980 to 1982 and from 1987 to 1995.
The late Mr Prasad was also a trustee of the Sabha for several years and had served as Lautoka City mayor and was a former senator.
He hailed from Saru, Lautoka and was an integral part of the Gurukul Arya Samaj and was in the committee responsible for the development of the Pandit Vishnu Deo Memorial College in Saweni, Lautoka.
The Sabha media relations officer, Kamlesh Arya, said the late Mr Prasad worked tirelessly to bring Arya Samaj into Fiji to serve in full capacities on its social and educational engagements.
“He played an important role in the development of Pt. Vishnu Deo Memorial College (1972), and went on to serve the school as its foundation manager,” Mr Arya said.
“He continued to serve as the manager of Pt Vishnu Deo Memorial College until he migrated to Australia.
“For his outstanding service to Arya Samaj in Fiji and to the wider Fiji, Mr Prasad was bestowed the Honour of “Arya Ratna” in 1997, by Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji,” he said.
A condolence gathering would be held at Pandit Vishnu Deo Memorial Hall on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 2 pm.
