It is time to pause and take stock of what has happened since the tragic deaths of a mother and her daughter at the Suva Bus Stand.
After the tragedy, the Suva City Council, Land Transport Authority and the Police joined hands to make the bus stand safer for everyone. Construction workers were brought in to build walkways and barriers to help protect pedestrians from moving vehicles. Road marshals were a familiar sight, directing people and traffic. The sound of whistles added to the cacophony of noises that filled the air. The bus stand was a hive of activities.
Some semblance of order was beginning to emerge as people fell in line and followed instructions from the marshals. Even at the lights, pedestrians stopped when red light came on. You would think that the deaths that prompted the changes had altered the way people thought as they sunk deep into their consciousness.
The safety structures are still there. The marshals appear every now and then. The sound of whistles has disappeared. People cross the road when the light is red. We seem to be falling back to the way it was before the tragedy.
The change was good while it lasted. But it was a kneejerk reaction to a more complex problem. How do we deal with a bus stand that is too small to cater for the burgeoning population and increasing volume of traffic? There are two options, relocate to a new site or build bypass roads to alleviate the congestion.
Let’s get the marshals back in the meantime to enforce the laws until a permanent solution is found.
