It’s a political movement,

JYOTI PRATIBHA

FijiFirst is not just a political party, it is a political movement with a vision for the next 10 to 20 years, says its general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
He sent this consistent message during his whirlwind campaign in rural areas of the Western Division over the weekend.
Yesterday, he met hundreds of people – including the disabled, mothers, housewives, cane cutters, businessmen, students and many more, explaining what FijiFirst stood for.
In a departure from conventional campaigning where there is a lot of pomp and ceremony followed by long speeches riddled with attacks and counter attacks at opponents, his meetings were simple.
He started on a very informal note.
After an average nine-minute speech, the floor at all venues were opened for questions. People seized the opportunity to ask about many issues, that included how voting would be done and counted.
Some raised roads and water issues. While admitting that water supply, or lack of it was an issue in Nadi, Mr Sayed- Khaiyum stressed to people that he did not want to lie and say that everything would be fixed today or tomorrow.
He said he and FijiFirst could do what many politicians over the years had been notorious for – making promises of fixing everything from water to roads to health and security and not keeping their word, but their conscience, philosophy and principles did not allow that.
He attributed water problems in Nadi to wrong engineering decisions made years ago by past governments. But the Bainimarama Government has been and will be fixing it.
He said that they could get Fiji Roads Authority to come and build cheap roads and bridges, but in six months time, it would be washed away. He said the Bainimarama-Government was after a more permanent and long term solution to issues such as water and road.
The series of meetings ended on a high note in Korovou last night.
