FijiFirst leader Voreqe Bainimarama said they would improve the free education policy and this would be highlighted in their party manifesto.
He had sent out a strong message to would-be politicians and political parties that free education was not just an election issue.
He was responding to a query raised by a supporter at the party’s campaign at Kalabu Primary School on Tuesday.
Free education, he said, was his inititive and had been planning for it in the last three years. He said in all his visits around the country, he would first stop at schools because he cared for the welfare of students.
“We have put in place the free education policy not to get the support of the public for the elections as would be politicians are saying,” Mr Bainimarama said.
“Fijian students now enjoy the free education that we have introduced for the first time in schools throughout Fiji. I urge every student here today to take advantage of the opportunities Government is providing and work hard to achieve your dreams.”
The free education covers students from Year 1 to Year 13. From next year, pre-school will also be included. Students, he said, could get a loan to pursue higher education at universities or technical colleges and obtain living allowances to enable them to do so.
“If you work really hard and get into the top 600 students, the Government will pay for everything. It’s all part of our vision to create a clever country in Fiji,” the party leader said.
“Political parties should not make free education as part of their election campaign but should tell the public what they would do on education.”
