People in the North generally earn less and pay more for goods and services compared to Viti Levu, says NFP candidate nominee Sant Kumari Murti.
Mrs Murti said the reason she was standing for NFP was because NFP was a multi-racial party with credible leadership and sound policies for the progress of the nation.
She said there were a lot of issues that need to be addresses for the benefit of the people not only in the North but for the nation.
“Middle and lower income earners cannot make a decent living to widespread relative poverty because of the high cost of living.”
“High rate of unemployment creates the necessary conditions for many of society’s problems such as high crime rates, marital breakdowns and seasonal employment impacts a large portion of the population as well,” she said.
“Poor health services due to unavailability of drugs in government hospitals, quality of services and also lack of opportunities for women.”
Mrs Murti said all these issues affected people in the North because a large population in Labasa being in the cane belt is subject to seasonal employment and this ultimately leads to urban drift.
“Due to urban drift, the eldest are left behind in Vanua Levu and they become destitute, thus requiring welfare assistance. Poor health services and this may due to geographical remoteness, a revamp of the northern health services is called for.”
Mrs Murti she would be concentrating most of her campaigns efforts in the North.
“Campaigning for this election has opened a whole new can of worms that I previously did not know existed,” she said.
