While watching World Cup soccer games 2014 Jayanti Morarji, of Nadi, remembered the day he hosted English soccer great Bobby Charlton in 1970 in Nadi.
The former Nadi rep hosted Charlton and his wife, Mona, at the Bamboo Room, Nadi Hotel.
Charlton and his wife were travelling after the Mexico World Cup in 1970 . After England lost to Brazil he was really disappointed because they were they were the past World Cup winners (1966). So he wanted to have a vacation.
England had played against Brazil, losing 1-0. According to what Charlton told Morarji, it was a game that could be called the final. Pele was playing for Brazil.
Morarji said it was an honour to meet one of the greatest players in the world at that time – later to become Sir Bobby Charlton – and host him at a place where the Nadi team used to gather.
