Veteran politician, People’s Democratic Party member Krishna Datt, will not be contesting the September 17 general election.
Mr Datt said: “The thought of standing in the election had crossed my mind several times but on balance I believe that there are sufficient numbers of people from the younger generation who have the ability, capacity and the will to contribute to the political development of the country.
“After 2006, I had made a promise to invite a new generation of leaders to the forefront and I believe we have them now and we could have more of them.”
As one off the founding members of the PDP, he said his interest had always been to ensure that the party was established and its manifesto launched.
Mr Datt said the party had a good multi-racial base.
However, he said his decision did not mean he had retired from politics but rather he would be offering his assistance where needed.
“I have decided to move on to play other roles if and when the opportunity comes my way, I believe that I still have a lot to offer and I am looking forward to working with the leaders of the future in a new rejuvenated Fiji,” Mr Datt said.
He also highlighted that the election would be fought between SODELPA and the FijiFirst party.
This, he said, was because the voting people were polarised between the two political parties.
“However, the smaller parties are likely to make an important impact on the political scene, with the very good prospect of making a contribution in mediating on the extremes of the political divide.
“They could be holding the balance of power giving a real opportunity for the smaller parties to play a positive role in reconciling opposing views,” he said.
