Famous Korean singer, Yoon Hyung-ju, who had translated the well-known Fijian farewell song ‘Isa Lei’ into Korean during the 1970s will be performing with a Fijian choir today.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea has organised the music concert called ‘Arirang and Isa Lei 2014’at the University of the South Pacific’s ICT Centre.
Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to Fiji Kim Seong-in said the song Isa Lei was widely-known to Koreans up to this day.
“Arirang is a popular form of Korean folk song and the outcome of collective contributions made by ordinary Koreans throughout generations,” Mr Seong-in said.
He said one particular song of Fiji comparable to Arirang was Isa Lei because it was usually sung for farewell wishing the reunion in the future.
“Both the songs are appraised to capture the essence of national sentiment and loved by the nation.”
Mr Seong-in said the music concert would be a two-hour event and Mr Hyung-ju would perform with the Fijian choir while Korean musicians and Korean traditional dancers residing in Fiji would also take part.
“The title of the concert Arirang and Isa Lei was chosen to express our desire to promote the understanding and friendship between Fiji and Korea through music,” he said.
