With the aim of promoting the agriculture sector as a lucrative business, a profession and a great contributor to Fiji’s growing economy, the Ministry for Agriculture launched the 2014 Agriculture Show yesterday.
Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu said the show was a careers expo platform to inform the school children, women and the youth that they could make a decent living or career in the agriculture sector.
“This year’s theme ‘Sustainable Family Farming for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood Security’ was derived from the Food and Agriculture Organisation and reflected the importance of agriculture in ensuring a healthy and wealthy Fiji,” Mr Seruiratu said.
He said it recognised the vital role of family forestry in celebration of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming.
“This is also a reminder for the pursuit of sustainable family farming for food, nutrition and livelihood security,” Mr Seruiratu said.
He said they must also focus on the need to maintain a balance of having a healthy and wealthy sustainable biodiversity (environment, soil, marine life, fauna and flora).
“We will have displays of agriculture, fisheries, and forestry produce and products, technologies and demonstrations.”
He said they would also have activities such as oratory contests, school garden competition and school theme song competition.
The Northern Agriculture show will start at the Subrail Park in Labasa from today until August 1 followed by the Western Agriculture show at the Ba Carnival in Govind Park from August 4 to 9.
