FijiFirst objects to OneFiji, says name, styles too similar

The FijiFirst party has objected to the registration of the proposed OneFiji party.
This was highlighted in a letter sent to the Fijian Elections Office from the FijiFirst general secretary, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, revealing the reasons for their objections to the registration.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the party objected under Section 9 2(a) of the Registration of Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree 2013 and said their registration should be refused.
This, he said was because the party would confuse the voting public.
“It is likely to be confused with or mistaken for FijiFirst,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“FijiFirst is the only political party with two words in it, with the word ‘party’ not in it and with the word Fiji in.”
“FijiFirst is the political party which has its name also as the logo.”
Mr Sayed Khaiyum said the proposed OneFiji party had exactly the same features.
“FijiFirst connotes or signifies that the party puts Fiji first. The other words has the country of Fiji first and its people, the Fijians.
“The Proposed OneFiji seeks to portray this idea while the philosophy behind this idea may not be exclusive to any political party. It is the manner in which this idea is manifested in the name of a political party that is the issue,” he said.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the logo of the proposed OneFiji party only had “OneFiji” and the rainbow; this manner, he said was very similar to how the FijiFirst had been laid out.
“OneFiji is put as one word similar to FijiFirst, and the beginning of the two words (one and Fiji) are capitalised as in FijiFirst.
“Furthermore, the word ‘One’ in the name OneFiji party is similar to the word ‘First’. Colloquially, everyone regards or equates the word ‘First’ to be one or number one.
“In this instance the voter could be misled to believe that FijiFirst and proposed OneFiji are the same,” he said.
Mr Sayed Khaiyum added, “Accordingly we object to the registration of the name OneFiji party and its logo OneFiji.”
Meanwhile, proposed OneFiji party general secretary Sitiveni Kalou confirmed that he hand-delivered the party’s reply to FijiFirst’s objection. Mr Kalou said he would seek the party’s approval to release the reply to the objection to the media.
