Family and friends gathered at Viseisei village yesterday to farewell pioneer Vuda businessman Giusepe Ruggiero, famously known as ‘Joe’.
He died at the age of 93 and his funeral was held at the village where he had long connections.
Mr Ruggiero developed the first hotel in Vuda which was officially opened by the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, a longtime friend.
The site is now known as the Mediterranean Villas.
Mr Ruggiero, a mechanical engineer and former Italian submariner, had fallen in love with Fiji during a visit and decided to settle in the country with his family.
The accommodation and restaurant property he developed on the hill at Vuda overlooking Nadi Bay introduced many Fijians to Italian food.
A multi-talented man, he also wrote novels and sang opera when he was not busy with business.
His eldest son Maurice Ruggiero said: “There was never a time when we would see our dad lying around, he would always be working. I will always remember him saying to me and my two brothers to ‘don’t waste time’.
“I had the good fortune of being here last weekend, visiting him and he told me that very soon he would go. But he was happy that his three sons had made him proud.”
Television producer and newspaper columnist Ajay Amrit who knew the late Mr Ruggiero said: “He was a very hardworking man, he made a lot of jokes and he was very joyful.”
Mr Ruggiero was laid to rest at the Natawa Chiefly Family Burial Grounds in Viseisei.
