The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement programme director, Tara Chetty, wants more pressure on political parties to keep the focus on elevating women to Parliament.
She made the comments during a public discussion on universal indicators of free and fair elections hosted by the Citizens’ Constitutional Forum (CCF) at the University of the South Pacific’s ICT Centre in Suva.
“I think what we can do is we can keep the pressure on political parties as we go onto elections to keep this focus on women in Parliament to ensure that the party mechanisms are supporting their women candidates because they can often become isolated or marginalised within parties,” Ms Chetty said.
She said CCF really believed in the women candidates that had put their hands up to participate in the upcoming elections and urged that support be given to them.
Ms Chetty said although we were six weeks away from elections she raised the question of whether or not we are ready for Parliament.
“For those women who are able to beat the odds and get elected, let’s be sure that we’re ready to support them, ensuring that we provide them with expertise,” she said.
