Headman of Vacoko Settlement in Naboro Filimoni Kaitavu said the income received from the sale dalo was favorable.
This dalo project was initiated by the Government to rehabilitate ex-prisoners and unemployed youths in the settlement. The total budget for this project was $13,269.92.
He said there would be a lot of positive impacts on the people. The Ministry of Agriculture provided 40,000 dalo suckers to the community and this has helped to drive the residents to utilise the resources they have.
“We have received $11,520 from sales. The harvest started in May this year and is expected to continue until the end of August.
“This 550-acre piece of land and is a Crown Lease. The land was given to us by the Government,”Mr Kaitavu said.
The total expected production is 32 metric tonnes which would fetch an income of $23,040.
Senior agriculture officer Bidhyakar Pande said the dalo was marketed at the municipal market and also at Vacoko roadside.
“The area under cultivation is eight acres and the standing crop includes 20,000 Uronivonu and 20,000 Maleka Dina. Other root crops and vegetables besides dalo are also planted,” Mr Pande said.
“This will help to improve the living standard of the community especially the people.”
The community has 24 households and a total population of 118.
