The construction of a new road along Muainaweni in Naitasiri will boost the work carried out by farmers and communities living along it.
For farmer Ami Chand, 60, the new road will ease the burden of transporting produce to towns or markets to sell.
For him, the new stretch of three kilometres of gravelled farm access road is a long-awaited development for many families living there.
“I thank the Government and the Commissioner Central’s Office for the assistance which is a first from any Government since I’ve lived here,” Mr Chand said.
“Last year I visited the showcase agricultural booth seeking assistance for a road access from our farm.”
Mr Chand said the response from Government was prompt and he was happy with the results provided so far.
“Now I can transport my agricultural produce without any hassle because I bought a new van after the road was completed two months ago,” he said.
“We used to travel by horse and cart dragged by bullock which was very difficult for the narrow pathway that we had. The main source of income for us is dalo.”
Commissioner CentralLaisenia Tuitubou said the development of roads in the central area came after the commitment by the Prime Minister to ensure that all rural communities had access to improved and better roads.
“In 2012, we assisted a farmer in terms of road access and a group in 2011,” he said.
“The construction for this road started in May and has helped the farmers who are potential dalo and ginger producers to supply to markets and export.”
