The Fijian Elections Office has announced the start of nomination of candidates’ process. This will open today August 5 at 8am and will close on August 18, 2014 at 12pm.
The Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said that completed nomination forms for political party candidates and independent candidates should be delivered to the Fijian Elections Office at 59-63 High Street, Toorak Suva. The Supervisor would receive the nomination forms and check if the form was fully completed.
Mr Saneem added that if the form was fully completed the FEO would receive the deposit sum of $1000.00 for independent candidates and $1000.00 each for all party candidates and the same would be receipted.
“The processing of the nomination form for independent candidates will take some time as we need to verify the details of the supporting members. There should be at least 1000 supporters for the independent candidate,” he said.
“The FEO will inform the relevant party or independent when the nominations have been approved or rejected.”
Electoral Commission Chairperson Chen Young says they would ensure balance and fair reporting.
“Our role is to ensure that we put all the right things into places where we can deliver a fair and creditable election,”Mr Young said.
According to Mr. Saneem, if a nomination was rejected the person could appeal to the Electoral Commission in writing no later than 4:00pm on August 19, 2014.
Mr Saneem said if a candidate wanted to withdraw his or her nomination he or she could do so by providing a written notice to the Supervisor of Elections no later than 12:00pm on August 19, 2014.
