The diversity and mingling make Ba and parts of the West unique, promoting understanding, tolerance and assimilation.
The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, made this statement last night at the Digicel Ba Riverside Carnival which coincides with Ba Town’s 75th year celebrations of being declared a township
In Ba and many areas of the west the cross-cultural mix particularly between iTaukei and Indo-Fijians has had a profound impact on racial and religious tolerance. They have learnt each other’s language and culture. Many iTaukei speak fluent Hindi and Indo-Fijians know the Ba iTaukei dialect.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum might have been alluding to this when he said “exciting times are ahead of us.”
“What has happened in Fiji over the past six or seven years- without this being a political speech, is that Fiji has truly become quite liberalised in the way we think, in the way we question things and in the way we look to the future and the vision we have about our country,” he said.
“With things like technology, who could have thought seven or eight years ago that we would send text messages for five cents or have things such as seven up.
“These sorts of things did not even exist. These sorts of things have happened and many of the younger people don’t know what were the conditions we had a few years ago.
“This is what we need to reflect upon, not just as a town but as a nation, we are the cusp, we are at a threshold of something very, very great and we must all together as a nation, we must all think alike. We cannot ever only think up till our noses, we must think 10, 15, 20 years ahead.
More than 1500 people gathered at Vinod Patel ground, braving the cold to see the contestants.
