The country’s first National Women’s Expo is shaping up as a first for many women attending the big event.
Luisa Lakokitavua, 68, of Naroi Village, Moala, in the Lau Group is excited about attending the expo scheduled to open at the Vodafone Arena in Suva today.
“I’m almost turning 70 and it’s the first time for me to attend an expo like this one so yes I’m very excited,” Ms Lakokitavua said.
“The three-day event will be a good chance for me to gain some knowledge about various handicraft skills that I had always wanted to learn.
“I’d like to learn new skills such as weaving fans and baskets.”
Meanwhile, Oripa Vakawalowalo of Mualevu Village in Vanuabalavu said the expo would provide them the chance to find markets for their products.
She said they had a lot of resources for making handicraft products which they could sell to provide for their livelihoods but there was no market on the islands.
