The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) could never be part of a new Fiji because it was too divisive for Fijians, particularly the iTaukei.
This comment was made by the FijiFirst leader and Prime Minister, Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama at Korovisilou Village in Serua yesterday.
He said the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) was misleading other political parties by saying they would reinstate the GCC when elected to power.
“The rest of the iTaukei people are left behind and this is very discriminatory,” he said.
According to the Prime Minister, politicising the GCC was started by the Soqosoqo ni Vakavulewa ni Taukei (SVT) and was later taken over by the Laisenia Qarase-led Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) party. He said the FijiFirst supported chiefs to lead their people in the villages.
