The touring Josh Clark-captained North Otago rugby side lost their first match in Fiji after being beaten by BLK Nadroga Stallions (Development) 17 – 11 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka last night.
The New Zealand side started the match well with running rugby and attacked the hosts from all angles to dominate the first half.
The hosts, meanwhile, had seasonal reps like Etonia Naba, Iliesa Ratuva, Ratu Seru Cakobau, Ulaiyasi Lawavou and Rupeni Rabici.
In the 20th minute, Nadroga led 3-0 with a penalty to Josese Kurokava. Five minutes later, North Otago’s Stephen Fenemor equalised. He added another three points in the 29th before Nadroga’s Jone Narori scored the first try of the match in the 32nd. Kurokava added the conversion for 10-6 to the hosts.
Three minutes later, former Fiji rep Simeli Koniferedi split the Nadroga backline open to score and put North Otago ahead by 11-10 at half-time.
The Stallions returned in the second spell a disciplined and structured side, allowing former Fijian 7s skipper Naba to dive in for the winning try in the 59th minute. Kurokava added the conversion.
North Otago XV Captain Josh Clark said, “It was a great game and we were made to work hard by a good side. We did expect some tough running rugby from the Fijian boys. We did our best as this was our first match of the tour.”
Nadroga Stallions vice-captain Ratu Seru Cakobau said, “We thank the North Otago boys for the good and clean game. It was not easy for us as we had to work hard in the second-half to score.”
