The Rotuma Women’s Association has commended the just concluded week-long National Women’s Expo, saying it was an eye opener for them.
A representative of the association, Betty Volau, said although they had some skills the expo had exposed them to a lot more.
“We really enjoyed the expo and we learned a lot from the handicrafts displayed at the event by our sisters from various parts of Fiji,” Ms Volau said.
She said the three of them who represented the association couldn’t wait to go back and share their experience with women back in Rotuma.
“Back home we mainly use pandanus leaves and coconut leaves and shells. At the event we were just amazed at the range of things displayed; from masi (tapa) to kuta, virgin oil, etc, etc,” Ms Volau said.
“We are thankful because women from all over could gather at one place and transfer knowledge and skills.”
She said the event was important because it improved their individual lives and the lives of their families and the country as a whole.
Ms Volau said there was little market for their products but were thankful to the ministry for providing assistance.
“Our products are bought by people on the island and we make do with that,” she said.
