Tears flowed freely as families bid loved ones goodbye

It was an emotional day for 190 soldiers who bid farewell to their loved ones at the Nadi International Airport, early yesterday morning.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces sent their second batch of soldiers for peacekeeping in the Golan Heights for one year.

Private Keverieli Lobau, 34, will be leaving his family behind for the first time to serve in Syria.

Wife Ilisapeci Lobau said it would be hard for them but at the same time they were happy with his achievement.

“He had tried to go to the Golan Heights several times but had failed and now that he has been given the opportunity we are so happy for him,” Mrs Lobau said.

“The family will surely miss his presence in the mean time and we pray that the good Lord will keep him safe.”

She is aware of the risks involved but she has high hopes that her husband will return safely.

“Knowing the kind of place Syria is, just by hearing it on the news and reading it in the papers it will be challenging for me and my husband,” she said.

“Thou I do not doubt that the Lord will keep him safe and will return him back to our family.”

Meanwhile, Mereoni Dalituicama, 44, could not hold back tears when she saw her 21-year-old son leave the country.

Manueli Dalituicama will also be embarking on his journey overseas for the first time.

“Manueli has always had a thing for travelling. After completing his studies from Natabua High he wanted to study aircraft engineer,” Ms Dalituicama said.

“Since Manu was late for enrolment he had opted to go for military recruitment and now here he is. Already we are missing him and we pray that the Lord will keep him safe.”

The 190-strong contingent will be part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force.
