The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association is appealing to the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to step in and help the sport.

Association official Setoki Mafi made this plea during their weekly competition in Suva last Saturday.

“We are asking the Prime Minister Bainimarama to help us as we really want to lift the profile of boxing. We are the only sport to win gold at the Commonwealth Games and we’d appreciate greatly if the governing sporting bodies would do their part too,” Mafi said.

“We’re ready to revamp our international participation and we simply need the PM to call for a repeal of the boxing laws as the International Boxing Federation is simply waiting for that. Once that’s done, the doors will start opening again.

“We’re also inviting the media to come out and help lift our public profile.”

Mafi brought to attention the raw talent on display at the National Fitness Centre and invited other boxing clubs to join.

“Every Saturday we have these fight nights and we’re opening up the door to any other clubs out there that are interested and want to join to are more than welcome to do so and should get in touch with us. We’ve got a lot of talented boxers that come out every fight night.”

Mafi confirmed despite a few problems, they were still planning to take a fully-fledged team to the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.

“We have missed the deadline and there are a few other problems, but we’re planning to send a full team of boxers. We want to take 10 male boxers covering all the weight categories and three female boxers.”

Meanwhile, Saturday night’s competition saw five fights with Mabel Talei of Warriors Club and Asinate Kolinisau of Police Boxing feature in the lone women’s match.
