Save the Children Fiji organised a conference for Early Childhood Education teachers at the Labasa Civic Centre yesterday.

The Vuli Taumada Shishak Teachers Conference will help the teachers in teaching their students who are at kindergartens or pre-schools.

Opening the conference was the divisional education officer Northern, Satya Shandil.

“One of the main guidelines in ECE programme is to promote school readiness in areas of safety, health and nutrition,” Mr Shandil said.

“The guideline also seeks to enhance the knowledge and skills of ECE teachers and it will also enhance the outcome of young children particularly in disadvantaged and informal communities.

“Not only ECE teachers, but parents too. They should be educated that the care of a child starts from the womb and ends in the tomb. Parents need to understand that eating the right food, abstinence from certain things and doing the right things help in birthing a healthy child.

“The other challenge is for ECE teachers to be remunerated with similar pay scale” he said

Pre-school teacher Ana Tewa of Nakama Kindergarten, said the conference would enable them to learn more about understanding their students and teaching them better.
