Vunivesi villager Maciu Namoce was delighted when nurses at Savusavu Hospital thanked him for the way he handled an injured woman on Monday night in his village in Cakaudrove.

The 42-year-old rescued of Lusiana Racagivanini when she injured herself in front of her house.

Maciu said Lusiana came out of their house that night and slipped. “When Lusiana slipped she had a huge cut on her hand and the injury looked really bad,” he said.

“Nobody in the village could do anything! I ran to her home to dress her wound. The injury was on her right hand. I quickly picked up my first aid kit, did the dressing and rushed her to Savusavu Hospital.”

From Savusavu Hospital Lusiana was later referred to Labasa Hospital early on Tuesday. When Lusiana reached Labasa she was taken into surgery and came out all good, thanks to Mr Namoce.

He thanked Red Cross for the training they carry out around the country.

“With the trainings we go through I was able to save Lusiana’s life,” he said.

He is a Disaster Risk Reduction volunteer and is certified to provide first aid by the Red Cross in Labasa.
