Laisenia Qarase has tried to revive racially divisive issues of the past while campaigning for SODELPA.
Mahendra Chaudhry has attempted to regain the Indo-Fijian support which used to form his powerbase as Labour leader.
But the two former prime ministers will both now not stand in the September 17 general election because of their court convictions.
Mr Chaudhry, a former Finance minister, yesterday lost his appeal against his conviction for breaching the Exchange Control Act. Mr Qarase, a member of SODELPA, was earlier convicted and jailed for abuse of office.
