The inaugural Fiji International ended on a high note yesterday at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course.

Attorney-General and Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who officiated at the closing of the event, said some were sceptical about the event, but its success was a loud and clear message for everyone that better days lie ahead.

He said the numerous international and local golfers who played it out for the US$1million prize-money would go on to become ambassadors of Fiji and of Fiji International.

With more than 400 million people watching the tournament live on TV, this was one of the biggest single sporting event which marketed Fiji to millions overseas.

Sayed-Khaiyum said the Bainimarama Government was confident about the event.

“I know a number of people had been sceptical about what could be achieved and the partnership we had developed. This was just the first year, I am sure next year we would draw a bigger competition,” he said. The Bainimarama-Government has inked a five-year deal with Fiji International.

“All the other players who participated would become our brand ambassadors themselves and we look forward to them spreading the good word about Fiji and also about the Fijian people- not just about our hospitality, our warmth and our friendliness, but also what a wonderful place Fiji is and what we can offer you.

“This collaboration has been done primarily to promote our country for tourism and Tourism Fiji has been very much a part and parcel of this process.

“To all those who are here, vinakavakalevufor being here, those who participated as caddies, the hotel, promotional staff, thank you for your contribution. You have all become ambassadors of Fiji.”
