The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation has recorded 182 child welfare cases so far this year.

Ninety-six cases are related to sexual abuse and the remaining 86 were of child neglect.

The Minister for Social Welfare and Women, Dr Jiko Luveni said the increase in reported cases was because of increased community awareness and the mandatory reporting of the cases required under the Child Welfare Decree.

“These latest statistics reflect the growing awareness out there with more people coming forward to report it,” Dr Luveni said.

Compared to last year, Dr Luveni said the first two quarters of this year saw an increase of 32 cases reported which reflected that people were reporting more now.

“The issues of violence and abuse are no longer treated as confidential matters, people are now reporting about the cases and the communities are also empowered to report such cases.”

“Compared to the first quarter last year, 33 abuse and neglect cases were reported, the vast majority are from within rural villages.”

Dr Luveni said reports were coming in and they were prepared and had structures in place for committees that were committed to protect children.

“Communities are included in the awareness programmes and they are championing the protection of women and children,” she said.
