Cakaudrove, one of the minnows of the tournament, upset Nadi 7-5 in the Under-14 grade yesterday at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.
The Suva Blues, the favourites which topped the districts last year by winning the Under-10, U12, U13 and U14 grades, made a good start yesterday by winning both their games. Suva played Cakaudrove in the U13 grade winning 20 – 0.
They went on to beat Tailevu in the U14 grade winning 17-0 and are hoping to clinch all six grades this year.

With the tournament being more competitive compared to last year, two more districts have joined this year – Gau and Wainibuka.

Wainibuka has not quite settled in as they lost both their games – beaten by Kadavu 15-0 in the U13 grade and Gau 20-0 in the U14.

Gau will hope to have a successful day today as they did yesterday beating Wainibuka which coach Meli Logavatu said was a proud moment.

“We are proud, especially in winning our first game. This is a big eye opener for the kids,” he said.

“Most of the kids have been very nervous. Most of them are wearing rugby boots for the first time and head gears which the parents put in for them.

“For them to win is a great feeling.”

Logavatu said the tournament had exposed the children.

“We want the kids to get a feel of what it is like to compete in such a competition.”
