Fijian companies Digicel Fiji and Punjas and Sons Limited teamed up yesterday to sponsor the National Netball Championships starting this weekend.

The companies will contribute $10,000 in cash and kind, totalling the sponsorship to $20,000 to help Fiji Netball run the tournament. Netball Fiji president Wainikiti Bogidrau said the sponsorship meant a lot because it provided a platform for netballers around the country to showcase their talents.

“This sponsorship has come just in time for the championships and we are thankful to Digicel and Punjas for their support and the confidence they have in the sport,” Waqa said.

There will be 34 teams participating and Bogidrau said new Fiji Netball coach Kate Carpenter would be be in the country to select players for national duties.

“Kate Carpenter will be at the tournament and she will be there to scout for new talents. The next 12 months will be a crucial one as we prepare for the World Netball Cup in Sydney, so we have got a lot going on in the season and this is just the start.” Bogidrau said.

Some of the teams competing in the championships include Suva, Navosa, Naitasiri Highlanders/ Northern Bulls, Taveuni, Tailevu Nadi, Lautoka and Nadroga with netballer’s ages ranging from the ages of 16 to 40.

Punjas Group marketing manager Gopal Jadhav said the sponsorship was a chance for them to give back to the community.

“The majority of our consumers are women and netball is a great opportunity to give back to our community.” he said.

The Digicel Punjas National Netball Championships will start on Friday morning at the Lautoka Multi-Purpose Courts.

Carpenter, a former Northern Ireland and Singapore coach, will select the Pearls national squad for the Malawi series in November.

The Fijian team will travel to New Zealand and Australia to play the ANZ franchise teams, the Pacific Games and the World Netball Cup next August.
