Mission accomplished.

That was how Lieutenant-Colonel SitiveniQiliho, Commanding Officer of Fijian troops who arrived in Nadi last night and earlier from Golan Heights, described the mission.

Some thought the Golan peacekeeping assignment was mission impossible more than 12 months ago.

The contingent headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Qiliho returned home after being replaced by another led by Lieutenant-Colonel IsoaLoanakadavu.

Lieutenant-Colonel Qiliho said in Nadi he was happy he kept his promise to Fiji to bring everyone back alive.

“I’m glad that has been achieved,” he said.

“I feel very content to set foot again in Fiji today (yesterday) with no loss of lives and that is what I really feel happy about, I can’t even find the words to describe the happiness.

“With the ‘can do’ attitude from the soldiers we were able to go there and set a benchmark for the other soldiers,” he said.

He said: “Golan Heights is an experience on its own, you can’t compare it in what we have experienced in Lebanon or in Iraq. It is a totally new experience,” he said.

He thanked the people of Fiji for their thoughts and prayers that had made everything possible.

In their final weeks in Golan, the Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and Head of Mission, Lieutenant-General Iqbal Singh Singha praised the Fijians for their high standards and work ethic.

He thanked Lieutenant-Colonel Qiliho for his leadership qualities.

He was speaking at a ceremony where Lieutenant-Colonel Qiliho handed over the baton of leadership to his successor, Lieutenant-Colonel Loanakadavu.

Meanwhile, orthopaedic surgeon Captain Dr Mark Rokobuli described his experience as worthwhile.

“I learnt a lot of new things and I am just so blessed to have been given this opportunity to have experience this.”
