The North Harbour Rays have muscled up their pack for the new National Rugby Championship that kicks off this weekend by recruiting an up and coming Fijian Test prop.

LeeroyAtalifo was recommended to the club by John McKee, currently Fiji’s director of rugby. He was coach of the Rays side which won the previous national rugby competition that lasted one year back in 2007.

Atalifo made his test debut on June 28 against the Cook Islands scoring a try in the game won by Fiji 108-6. One of Atalifo’s teammates in that game was powerhouse Crusaders and former NSW Waratahs and Manly Marlins winger NemaniNadolo.

The 23-year-old forward is considered one of the most promising young forwards in Fiji and had attracted interest from several European clubs.

McKee was keen for Atalifo to be tested and gain experience at the higher level of the NRC.

He clearly sees him as someone who will play a role for Fiji in next year’s World Cup in England.
