Hundreds of people braved the hot sun to witness the opening of the 2014 Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North yesterday.

Like every other year contestants, bands and marching teams were part of the parade through Labasa Town.

People travelled from as far as Bua and Cakaudrove to be part of the festival’s opening ceremony at Subrail Park.

Vasitai Roko from Nagasauva Village in Udu said she travelled to Labasa with friends to be part of the festival.

“This is our first time to attend this festival and we hope to enjoy it during our stay here,” she said.

Festival president Vincent Sahayam said this year the festival would be big and different.

“We know this festival will be a success and everyone will enjoy the food, the rides and the entertainment,” he said.

Meanwhile the festival committee hopes to improve civic amenities, by putting in place necessary infrastructure to facilitate better recreational and sporting facilities in Labasa.

Labasa Town’s special administrator, Vijay Chand thanked the committee for its theme “Our Environment, Our Future” as it blends perfectly with government’s vision of providing a healthy environment for all Fijians.

He said Labasa Town Council was very much involved in protection of the environment so that our future generation was safeguarded.
