The 2014 Rewa Galaxy Kaji Rugby Cup finals were delayed for almost an hour last Friday. This was after someone triggered the fire alarm in the main grandstand at the ANZ Stadium.

The Under-11 and U12 grade finals were underway when the alarm sounded at 6.52pm, prompting games officials and Fiji Sports Council staff to evacuate the grandstand while the National Fire Authority made a thorough check of the facilities.

Suva Kaji Rugby president Michael Koroi says the delay was unfortunate.

“The alarm held up the games for about an hour but eventually we were able to finish the event.”

Koroi said the capital district’s four wins were more than enough considering the wide field of competition.

“For Suva, it definitely was another great outing and we are more than happy with the four wins. Even if we just won one, we’d be happy considering the competitiveness this year. We know some of the districts didn’t win anything and we feel for them.

“Of course we know we could have done some things differently to give a better chance to the two other teams that didn’t make the finals but we’re grateful nonetheless for what we have achieved.”

Kaji powerhouse Suva managed to take home the U9, U13 and U14 grade titles this year and settled for a joint win with Macuata in the U11 grade.

Meanwhile, following the delay the U11 and Under-12 finals resumed at around 7.40pm after the crowds were eventually ushered back into the grandstands with the U13 final starting after 8pm before the U14 final got underway and finished at 9pm.
