Josh Alexis Valentine, 30, did not join the 2014 Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus to win but to pay tribute to a friend who died from cancer.

His friend was former Adi Cakobau School sprint queen and news media executive, Laisa Taga, who died in April this year.

Ms Taga, 56, was the first woman editor of a daily newspaper in Fiji. Mr Valentine said the late Ms Taga was his mentor.

“Ms Taga was someone I looked up to and she always encouraged me to do something for the community,” Mr Valentine said.

“I told the other contestants that I am not here to win but to fulfil my promise to a friend and I am the oldest from all the contestants.” He was satisfied he has done his part.

“Now I can take a wreath and go to her grave; I have learned a lot as a contestant and will always cherish the memory,” Mr Valentine said. “I am ready to take another step knowing that I have fulfilled my promise.”

Mr Valentine hopes to do more community work.
