Namaqumaqua Village in Serua province is one of the 55 communities to be equipped with skills and information on sexual reproductive health and family planning.

Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni said their team had conducted reproductive health awareness for 40 women and youths of the village last Friday.

“The awareness programmes are interactive and enables the participants to seek as much information as possible,” Dr Luveni said.

She said they wanted to stress the importance of family planning and the use of contraceptives like condoms to stop unwanted pregnancy and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The president of Soqosoqo Vakamarama Serua, Maria Tuibau, said it was the first time for them to have exposure to such an educational and informative workshop.

“It has given opportunities for women and youths to brainstorm strategies to address problems like teenage pregnancies,” Mrs Tuibau said.

She said in the Serua province they had cases of teenage pregnancies and these young girls were not able to complete their education or cope with the pressures of being a single mother.

“This workshop has been an eye-opener for parents on the importance of communication between the parents and their children.”

Mrs Tuibau said they also learned ways they could protect themselves from killer diseases like HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

The programme is co-ordinated by the ministry in partnership with United Nations Population Fund and Medical Services Pacific.
