Membership of Fiji’s biggest Christian denomination – the Methodist Church – has been dropping for the past 10 years.

This was revealed to Church ministers and delegates by the Church Trust Secretary Livai Tuisaravere during the presentation of the Church’s statistics report yesterday at Centenary Church for the church’s annual conference.

Secretary for communications for the church Reverend James Bhagwan said they noted decrease of memberships.

“There were increases in membership in 21 divisions, but at the same time there were decreases in membership of 34 divisions with one division recording no change in membership throughout the year,” he said.

“This was raised as a concern and also the percentage of “siga dina” or confirmed members was up by one per cent from 57 last year to 58 per cent this year.

Rev Bhagwan said there were also concerns raised in regards to the drop of membership.

“The issue that has been raised is how our statistics are being collected because they have not matched the Governments census. If we look at the Government’s census in 2007 it was over 300,000 Fiji citizens that said they were Methodist by denomination,” he said.

“However, our statistics showed a different thing. The conference resolved that next year there would be serious emphasis on doing a full spiritual census of our community of faith.

“It would be interesting to see next year’s statistics because of the reconciliation work we have been doing so we will like to see what sort of impact our attempts of reconciliation at spiritual revival at focusing salvation souls as first of the Methodist church in Fiji.”

He added that a special committee has been approved to be formed to deal with this issue next year.

Meanwhile, Reverend Dr Epineri Vakadewavosa is the new elected General Secretary.
