The heads of dental services from 14 Pacific Island countries are in Fiji for a three-day meeting at the Holiday Inn, Suva, to address some of the challenges they face on oral health.

One of the keynote speakers from Germany, Dr Habib Benzian, said the level of tooth decay in most countries was quiet high and they wanted to address this issue.

“This is my first trip to Fiji and I have had very interesting discussions with all the participants,” Dr Benzian said.

“The Fijian Government legislation that has banned the market and sale of any toothpaste that do not contain added fluoride chemicals two years ago is a very excellent move.”

He said they saw a diverse range of countries from low income to high income and some of the challenges they faced. One of the major challenges they faced was geographical isolation.

“The large part of the population is around the main island and there is a range of small islands with fewer people so how can we make sure that everyone has access to the same level of services.”

He said most countries faced difficulties in term of finance and they were also strained in terms of human resource as most of the health workers were not well trained.

The meeting ends today.
