Emori Waqa was part of 17 players who turned up for the Vodafone national 7s fitness test at the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Gym in Suva yesterday.

Waqa was part of the Flying Fijians extended squad selected for the Pacific Nations Cup earlier this year. “This is a step up for me and it’s another milestone for me. I am hoping I get selected so that opportunities can open up.” he said.

His aim to be a future national rugby rep.

“The fitness test was good and I’m planning to represent my country because playing in that white jersey is very important. It will be an honour and privilege to be selected.”

Forty-one players were picked to undergo the fitness test. After yesterday’s test, 24 will be tested in the West today.

“The 2014/2015 series is a long tournament, so I will keep on training and hopefully I will get picked. There is always opportunity. When one door closes, another one opens.” he said.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan said he was happy to start preparations for the upcoming 7s series.

“It’s good to just get going again after a very long time away from seeing the boys,” he said. “It’s good to see all the boys and you know they are not bringing down the house with amazing scores, but they are doing ok.”

Ryan said he would look at improving his players before the series starts.

“Whatever scores they get here I can improve enough so that they are good enough to play international sevens in a month’s time.

“If I feel I cannot improve them in that time frame, then they won’t make it into the squad next week. At this point it’s about attitude and wanting to work as hard as you can to get yourself on the team.”

Today will be the fitness test for western-based players at the HPU Gym in Sigatoka.

The first leg of the 2014/2015 IRB World Series will be the Gold Coast 7s in Australia from October 11-12.
