FijiFirst vice president and Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has cleared any misconceptions on why he didn’t stand as a candidate.

“The reason I didn’t stand is that I feel that in my traditional role I will be better utilised,” he said.

“I can sit and make sure that developments are being carried out, that the progress continues and also to ensure that the community are well informed and to assist the community in decision making in how they manage their resources and also to watch over the Government in a way that protects the interests of not only the iTaukei but also the community.”

Ratu Wiliame was on the campaign trail with FijiFirst candidate and former Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu in parts of Bua and Macuata last week. He said they visited Kubulau, Wainunu, Bua Lomanikoro, Namuka and other small communities.

He said most of the issues raised were centered around land issues, the Great Council of Chiefs and birth registration.

He said that in the past Governments  or certain departments  promise certain things but don’t carry them out.

“So since they are living in this province,  it’s part of the job of the traditional head to ensure that the services are carried out.

“I’m also not just here for the iTaukei but for all – if it wasn’t for the Indian farmers and the rice farmers of Dreketi and the shop keepers of Labasa Government wouldn’t have assisted the North so I have to be here to see that the Government does its job  – that the services are being provided fairly to the people and to see that the traditional set-up provides its service too to the Government.

“I think the main thing is to ensure the stability the development and the education – taking into consideration the environment.”
