The Under-20 National Champion Keez Terubea will face stiff competition at the Flour Mills of Fiji-sponsored National Junior Championship this weekend.

“All chess players who are 19 years of age and below as at Sunday are allowed to compete,” general secretary Goru Arvind said.

“We are expecting some spectacular chess from Nahapetyan Gor, Jacquelyn Masilomani, Zen Borg, Stanley Zhang, Neelam Kumar, Austin Koroi, Claudia Koroi, Vinooda Senewiratne and Kabrina Terubea. Several prizes will be at stake, so members of the public are encouraged to play.”

USP Student Women’s FIDE Master (WFM) Hilda Vukikomoala is the only National representative under 20 years of age. Returning from one of her career best performances at the recent World Chess Olympiad at Tromso, she will be a force to reckon with for all her opponents.

“Apart from wins against Azeb Berhe (Ethiopia), Aseel Faqeeh (Palestine), Olabisi Rabiu (Nigeria) and Tayseer Mohammed (Sudan), Hilda also drew against Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) Sheena Ramsay (Barbados), Msiska Royce (Malawi), Natkritta Thanarotrung (Thailand) and Thitu Winfred (Kenya),” states Women’s National Champion Gloria Sukhu. “That’s 4 wins and 4 draws from 11 games, an outstanding performance from a Pacific Island female in a World Championship. Based on her current form, I would tip her as a favorite.”

Year 9 student Menash Fareed from Yat Sen Secondary School is also expected to provide tough competition since he has an International (FIDE) Rating which is very close to Hilda. Menash impressed everyone earlier in the year by defeating former National Champion Manoj Kumar in a brilliant rook versus pawns endgame.

The tournament which is bound to attract a record number of young players will start at 09:00 AM on Sunday 31 August at the Level 4 Tappoo City Conference Room.
