Former Ba coach Yogen Datt has been roped in by the Fiji Football Association to be part of its panel of national mentors.

Datt, who was released by the Ba Football Association after the Vodafone Fiji FACT, will start his duties with the national Under-17 side, which will play in the OFC World Cup play-offs in January in American Samoa.

He will work with U17 coach Kamal Swamy in preparing the team.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel says Datt has shown his worth and potential and is ready to step up to the national level.

“Yogen Datt had approached us that he wants to be associated with football and wants to coach the national teams. We had a good meeting with him over the weekend and he has agreed to assist the Under 17 team. This is very positive with the wealth of knowledge these coaches have been given over the number of years we’d like them to make use of it. With Fiji FA, we believe that he should assist the Fiji team and the coaches are happy with him to assist.”

The U17 training squad is currently in camp in Ba.

Meanwhile, Patel says Fiji FA expects an exciting end to the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants this weekend.

All Freight Logistics Suva takes on Rewa in the first semi-final at 3pm on Saturday, while Ba battles Lautoka at 5pm at the ANZ Stadium in the capital.

“I think so the best team with depth and can adapt to the 90-minute football in the two days will be the winner.

“And looking at the four teams, they have adapted well and if they play until the last minute in the 90-minute football anybody can score and that is something that turns the table. The teams have to make sure they have to play until the last whistle and the team that does that will be the winner at the end of the day.”

The final will be played on Sunday at 3pm, before which the third place play-off takes place at 1pm.
