The Fiji Under-19 basketball squad gears up for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Oceania U19 championship which will be held in Suva from December 1-8 at the Vodafone Arena.

Fiji Basketball development officer Laisiasa Puamau said some of the players had been playing in this week’s 2014 Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji Secondary Schools Championship in Suva.

“Everyone has been looking forward to December which will be very exciting and very competitive,” Puamau said.

The championships is an international qualifying event for the World U19 Basketball Championships in 2017.

For Fiji to host this event, marks the first time ever for the tournament to be held outside Australia and New Zealand. It will also be the first time for the event to be open to the Pacific nations to contest for a place in the World Championships.

This is a clear indication that Pacific Nations have become a force to reckon with in the game of basketball, Puamau said.

The championships will see 10 countries travelling to Fiji with about 300 male and female youth basketballers to compete on the international stage. Teams include Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Samoa, American Samoa, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.
