Residents in the Western Division are encouraged to use water sparingly as the prolonged dry season is taking its toll.

This is according to the Acting Commissioner Western, Luke Moroivalu who said some places do not have access to water.

“My message is for the people to use water sparingly should we experience drought,” said Mr Moroivalu.

“The prolonged dry spell due to the below average rainfall and low humidity is the reason for the division experiencing dry weather. This has caused water to dry up very quickly in the maritime islands and parts of the Western Division, Malolo, Vatulele and Yasawa.”

He said they were receiving requests for water to be supplied to areas in the interior of the Western Division. So far they have been carting water to the maritime islands because their water sources have dried up.

“We have also met with the relevant stakeholders, the Water Authority, Fiji Electricity Authority, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health to put in place contingency plans should we move into the dry season,” Mr Moroivalu said.

People in the West are also requested to boil all water for use.
