More than 70 yachts are expected in the 31st annual Musket Cove Regatta at MaloloLailai Island from next Friday.

Race controller Jack Hargraves, who has been associated with the event for the last three decades, says there should be more yachts in 2014 following the success of last year’s event.

“So far we have 70 yachts registered and the number is likely to increase in a few days,” said Hargraves.

“We are expecting about 70 to 80 yachts and it is a fun regatta, it’s not serious like the America’s Cup.”

He said the regatta has been an annual event since the icon of Fiji tourism, the late Dick Smith, started it in 1984. Over the years, participants came from international ports from as far as the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, New Zealand and Australia.

“We have a lot of multihull yacht nowadays and we have the monohull as well. Every year we have seen very fast boats which makes racing very interesting,” Hargraves said. “We are expecting some yachts from Savusavu and the Royal Suva Yacht Club as well.”

Other competition includes the golf tournament, Vonu paddle race from Namotu Islands Resort, Port OpuaHobie Cat challenge and the much anticipated Fiji Water Round Malolo Classic (near Sandbank).

Port Denarau’s Nigel Skeggs on board Unique will be defending the title in the multihull category while Jevan Shirley (NZ) on Domino 2 in monohull. Hargraves thanked sponsors, Paradise Beverages, Fiji Water, Tourism Fiji, Punjas, Pacific Energy, Victoria Wines, Vodafone, Port Opua, Bridge Marina Travelift, Tauranga Marine Industry Association, Tauranga Bridge Marina, CJ Patel, Tappoos, and Resorts including Lomani Island, Plantation Island, and Beachcomber.

The event will be hosted at Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina on September 5 – 10.
