Twenty – one countries are all learning from the best practices Fiji has adopted on successful climate change adaptation.

This was revealed during the 2014 Workshop on National Disaster Prevention and Protection Policy and Practice held in Taiwan.

Fiji representative to the workshop George Dregaso, who is an officer with the National Disaster Management Office, presented his papers to the countries including South America, Guatemala, Argentina, Columbia, Caribbean, West Asian, Pacific and USA.

Mr Dregaso’s presentation was based on successful climate change adaptation best practices which resulted in the successful relocation of Vunidogoloa Village, the first indigenous community to be relocated in Fiji.

The Disaster Prevention and Protection Policy already in place in Fiji includes the early warning system placed at the Ba, Navua, Rewa and Nadi rivers which resulted in zero causalities during the 2013 – 2014 floods.

Dr Li Wei-Sen, secretary- general, National Science and Technology Centre for Disaster Reduction in Taiwan said that on behalf his government he commended Fiji on the effort in developing policies and best practices for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.

“Mr George Dregaso’s comprehensive presentation about current developments and threats of natural hazards in Fiji, there are lots common interests worthy of mutual collaboration on disaster risk reduction between Fiji and Taiwan” Dr Wei-Sen said.

“With George’s visit to Taiwan, the two countries are able to develop future joint effort in coping with natural hazards and start learning best practices of disaster risk reduction,” he said

Meanwhile, Mr Dregaso thanked the Taiwanese government for the invitation that has enabled the Fijian Government to share its experience as far as Disaster Risk Reduction is concerned.

The workshop will conclude on September, 5.
