First Project Takes Shape in Ovalau, Ra

Located in the interior of Ra province, Ovalau Village, Nasau, recently witnessed the opening of its first development project.

The village submerged in dense mountains of Ra is accessible by completing a journey of over two hours, is a typical rural community that depends on solar energy and farming for its livelihood.

Having the firsthand experience of reaching to this interior community, the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni has become the first senior government official to set foot on the soils of Ovalau Village in Nasau, Ra.

The official opening of new Ovalau Women’s Resource Centre also marked a milestone achievement for Bainimarama Government, for being the first to create a development project in Ovalau. The new building was built with a funding of $7000 from the Ministry of Women.

Dr Luveni said the new resource centre would boost the income-generating and create skills training opportunities for Ovalau Women’s Club.

With tears of joy, Aloesi Nai, president of Ovalau Women’s Club said the centre would empower 22 women, most of whom are domestic workers.

“The assistance from the ministry will go a long way in easing the challenges we face. Through the new centre, women will be able to sew school uniforms, bake bread and take orders for catering to earn income for their families,” Mrs Nai said.
